Barcelona. A city steeped in culture and history, and believed to have been founded even before Rome. A city ahead of its time. Fast forward to today and, again, this city is leading the way, with its dynamic spirit and focus on innovation.
One of the first European cities to even consider being ‘smart’ and to utilise technology to improve the lives of its citizens, Barcelona was a natural choice as the location to hold this year’s Cisco Live Europe, which took place last week.
This was our 27th European edition of the show – an event designed to inspire people to thrive in the world of digital business.
Around 12,500 technology innovators, together with partners, press and analysts, descended on the Fira to hear from keynote speakers and IT thought leaders, to attend education sessions, and – excuse the pun – network.
It was an exciting week kicked off by Rowan Trollope who gave everyone a glimpse into the future. From potential driverless hover taxis in Dubai, to smartphones disappearing, to there being almost 10 billion people on earth - the only way for such things to come to fruition and, importantly, survive is to drive efficient use of technology…all underpinned by the network.
To bring everything back to the here and now, David Goeckeler announced the big news of the event, which was around Cisco’s latest development in intent-based networking. With new predictive analytics and assurance capabilities, this is the network for digital business. Designed to be more proactive, the constantly learning and adapting network will automate troubleshooting and increase speed and agility. It really is a new era for networking – from the data centre right through to the network edge.
In addition to the keynotes, delegates had the opportunity to participate in, among other things, technical breakout sessions, and visit the World of Solutions, the DevNet zone and the Gateway Lounge. This was where many of our customer advocates shared their stories about how they are utilising Cisco technology to innovate.
I was privileged to spend time with analysts and press, as well as a range of customers who spoke about how they have conquered their Security and Enterprise Networking challenges with Cisco. A particular highlight was Barclays Bank, who started this journey with us three years ago. The network has never been more critical to business success.
This is clearly an exciting and pivotal time to be in networking and, as we make sense of an increasingly digital world and the future ahead, Cisco’s new innovations mean that it’s now time for networks to be able to make sense of themselves.
