At Cisco Live in Barcelona, the discussions were all about the importance of innovation in today's market where the speed of change will only get faster. The important question for us all, is how can Cisco and its partners generate value and deliver true innovation in the digital era?

We hear a lot about the need to transform, but the journey we are on, together with our partners, is a muIti-year evolution. It will take many iterative steps to deliver against the expectations of our customers and the market.

At the heart of this evolution, there is the need for all of us to evolve as individuals. It starts with us.


Are you future-proof?
Do you have the skills of the future? Would our CEO’s or managers re-hire us to do the roles we are doing today – in a week, a month or a year from now? This is an important question we all need to ask ourselves.

Within our industry, we see the desire to capture the opportunity for more growth and to better understand how technology can drive that growth by addressing the challenges our customers are facing. This is forcing us to think differently:

63% of networks are still maintained manually and not designed to fulfil a digital strategy. Organisations can’t scale and deal with complexity
- The attack surface is increasing exponentially and cybercrime is on the rise
- The data collected as a result of ubiquitous connectivity is unstructured and unused

CEO’s see a substantial impact of digital transformation, but less than a third are actively responding. They find it difficult to get the creativity and innovation skills they need, as surveys reveal.


Beyond the comfort zone
Customers are looking for help with all these areas. This is an enormous opportunity for us all and we need to do much more than we are doing today.  We need move faster and we need to move beyond our comfort zone.

To provide some context: Cisco and IMD Global Center for Digital Business Transformation researched global CEO’s to identify the three ways that they create a competitive advantage: cost value, experience value, and platform value.

The first two ‘value drivers’ are traditional ways to compete. The ‘Platform’ value driver is new to the digital age, and it is the driving force of the most disruptive companies. It is about capturing value from technology innovation to deliver very different capabilities and results.


Value beyond connectivity
We dedicated the last 30 years to connecting the world. Now it’s time to reimagine the future of networking to deliver value that goes beyond pure connectivity to help our customers’ solve their challenges with the Network Intuitive:

- Simplicity and automation – technology needs to become easy to use, and we need to automate
- Security and compliance – security that is embedded in the network, endpoint and the cloud
- Software, Analytics and insights – being able to take information from previously unstructured data and extract the value to generate wisdom

This is where the value of the platform starts to help us to differentiate and to deliver a superior experience to our customers.


Skills beyond competencies
The real power comes when you start to think end to end. Digital strategies within our customer’s organisations are designed and delivered by the line of business – they develop the blueprints for the digital era. We have to ensure that IT and the line of business are closely aligned to harness the power of the platform value.

This will require all of us to build new skills that go beyond competencies. We need to address customers in a different way and build new relationships. Cisco is committed to supporting you on this journey with its partners and ecosystem in order to seize the opportunity ahead of us together.


True innovation for the digital era
The power of the platform will help us to differentiate and to evolve as a community. Talent, skills and knowledge will be more critical than ever before. This will require all of us to evolve – more than might be comfortable. And, we need to move fast in order to capture the opportunity and drive this evolution.

My ask to you is: Take these principles beyond Barcelona – into a new era!
